Project History

Following the approval of the EIS, things were looking bleak for North Metro as RTD announced that funding wasn't available for construction of the corridor based on sales tax revenue forecasts.  RTD continued to look for funding possibilities through a variety of sources and as small pools of money became available, early action items were completed on the corridor.  These included expansion of the commuter rail maintenance facility to accommodate 30 vehicles for North Metro, and purchase of electric commuter rail vehicles (enough to operate from Denver Union Station to 70th Avenue) and approval to design the line from DUS to 70th Avenue. These decisions have saved RTD millions of dollars, prepared the North Metro Rail Line for design and construction and allowed RTD to move forward when the opportunity arose.

Following an unsolicited proposal, which was determined to have technical merit, in February 2013, a Request for Proposals was released to contractors in late June, proposals were received and evaluated and a contractor was approved on November 26, 2013 to design and construct the line between Union Station and 124th Avenue.

Past North Metro Studies

Pre - 2006 - Studies and FasTracks Vote
Even though it seems like the North Metro Rail Line is just starting, it's taken years of planning to get to this point.

2006 - 2011 - Environmental Impact Statement
Beginning in Sept. 2006 RTD and their consultants worked to develop and
screen proposed alternatives for the North Metro corridor; perform a detailed environmental evaluation of each alternative; and incorporate public and agency
feedback. The preferred alternative became the North Metro Rail Line.  In 2009 RTD purchased the railroad right-of-way from 70th Avenue to the north end of the corridor and beyond, putting in place an essential element of the project. The Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was completed in late 2010 and approved by the Federal Transit Administration in April 2011 through a Record of Decision.
