Colfax Station - Joe O'Connell

Title of Art: Stories Interweave

The art for the Colfax Station on the R Line will be installed underneath the bridge that will serve as the elevated light rail train station.

Artist Joe O'Connell of Tucson, Arizona is using laser-cut steel and LED lights for his creation. He visited in Aurora in 2015 to research the community in order to decide what to create for the Colfax Station.

Stories Interweave will celebrate the different places Aurora residents come from and what they bring to the city.

Stories Interweave consists of 8-12 suspended sculptures painted in brilliant colors filling the South and North platforms of the Colfax Avenue bridge. The skin of each sculpture will be made up of different languages cut into steel and welded together to create three dimensional lantern-like forms intermixing languages and stories. Arranging phrases in three dimensions creates multiple ways to read them.

"My goal is to create new ways to live with art-ways in which art solves problems, enriches the human experience and creates an atmosphere of participation, curiosity, and connection to community. I use a remarkable diversity of forms and materials but the common thread is my belief that an art piece is not complete until other people have made it their own through interaction," O'Connell said.

Joe grew up as a maker and became an artist.

After a liberal arts education that spanned four universities he began working for science museums where he designed and built exhibits.

He founded Creative Machines in 1995 to design and fabricate interactive exhibits for museums around the world. He began making public art in 2004 in order to reach new audiences.
